Help a sick hamster smell nice..........?
Hello, I'm asking this question for my sister.
She has a Hamster called J.K. ... he has sores on his belly, which they have let the vet see. The vet has given him anti-biotics, but never really said to my sister and her partner how they should be caring for J.k.
My sister was on the phone saying J.k really could do with a bath, but she hasn't a clue what to bath him with incase it irritates these sores.
Has anyone got any ideas what she could bath him in... she usually used Johnson's baby wash for J.k.. but she's not sure if that will hurt him....
any help much appreciated.... you'll be helping a sick hamster smell nice.

Don't wash J.K, as he will clean himself.
Also, if you were to wash him he could catch a cold, it could irritate his sores and if water were to get in his ears, then it could cause infection or even worse - make him deaf. -- which wouldn't be good as their eyesight is very poor.
You could purchase some inexpensive hamster cleaning wipes from pets at home to wash him -- not his sores though - it will most likely sting.
BUT -- Pets at home do a soothing cream for cuts, its very good as i have used it on many occasions for dry skin and minor cuts.
It works like magic and is only a few pounds.
Its called "Tea Tree Skin Cream" Made by "Johnson's"
I do recommend it for J.K's sores.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck to your sister.

Ok first off, if the hamster starts out nice at the store then they usually stay that way (not always), but usually. Chewing on the bars: get rid of the bars or the cage, the hamster has to chew. Also think of it this way, he's a jailbird! He's trying to get out! For some reason hamsters prefer chewing on plastic bars, over other chew toys, try getting metal bars. Personally I prefer to use a 10 gallon tank, with a lid and water bottle. Now for the big question: why it doesn't like you; There are lots of answers and lots of questions to go along with those answers, so here we go. 1, do you or any of your family members smoke? Any animal doesn't like the smell and the only way they have to tell you this is to bite. 2, do you eat before or have unclean hands when trying to handle it? If you have some thing sweet to eat or have been say pulling weeds or petting other animals before trying to handle the hamster it will bite. Because it tastes or smells either good or bad and is either wanting some or is telling you to get it away. Whatever just wash your hands before and after handling. 3, do you wear a strong perfume/cologne or deodorant? the hamster may not like what it smells on you and is saying stay away. 4, are you going through any medical problems or puberty? The smells/odors of your natural body odor could be a problem. Things like medications can change your smell and some animals are put off by this, you might want to give up on pets until the problem clears up. 5, Is the hamster male or female? Females claim territory, you are invading, she is defending. Pick her up by the scruff of the neck and see if you still get bitten while handling, if so that isn't the problem. 6, Is the hamster healthy? Sick hamsters DON'T like to be handled period. I hope all this is of some help to you, I have been raising hamsters for over 10 years and this info has been of help to others.

I used to bathe mine with the oatmeal shampoo i also had for the dogs, but since he has sores he could have an allergic reaction to the soap maybe. I would reccommend to call the vet that treated him in this case. make sure his cage gets cleaned every day, specially while he is sick. Make sure u NEVER ever use cedarchips as they can get hamsters even sicker, hopechests used to be made out of cedarwood to keep rodents out, it can get their lungs sick and even kill them
Good Luck, hope he gets better

you should never wash hamsters. it will damage its skin even more and dry it out. especially dont use shampoo because this will rid the skin off all the natural oils that is keeping it healthy. i know what im takling about but if u dont want to listen to me fine! but dont bath ur hamster!! u should only bath them like 3 times a year!. they clean themselves 24/7.

NEVER, EVER bathe a hamster. It causes wet tail or a cold, which hamster can die from. Try changing the bedding type, they make scented bedding sometimes.

You aren't supposed to wash hamsters because they can catch colds and pneunomia (not sure how you spell it!) they clean themselves, just like cats.
