It could've been Jupitar, it's visible right now...

or Sirius, the brightest star in the sky.

Rigel. At a distance of 1100 light years, and an absolute magnitude -6.4 It has a brightness approximately 33,000 times that of our sun. Followed by the giant red star Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse is the largest star we can see with the naked eye. Rigel is over 1000 times more luminous than Sirius.

Jupiter was near the Moon last night. The Moon moves across the sky at the rate of about 12 degrees a day as it orbits Earth, so it will not be nearly so close tonight.

I remember years ago my grandmother called me to ask what that bright star next to the Moon was. I told her it was Venus (which was true that day) and she was delighted. The next night she called and said in a panic, "IT MOVED!". I told her of course it did, the Moon and planets are all moving all the time. She was surprised by that, thinking it was only Earth that moved.

That would be Jupiter. It will be slightly southeast of the moon for many nights to come. The peak visibility for Jupiter is from June - to early October. Seeing as how Jupiter is the brightest thing in the night sky besides the moon at night.

Does the star move around relative to other stars, or it is generally in the same patch of the sky?

Errm, the only planet out right now (tonight, UK) would be Jupiter i think.

If its not Jupiter then its probably Sirius, that's the brightest star in the sky.

Jupiter is now up after dark.

Download the free Stellarium planetarium software, put in your location, and it will show you everything that is up in the sky.

if you are looking to the south east of the moon and the celestial body that follows the moon through out the night i believe that you are looking at the planet uranus not a star
