Why are there Cubs fans everywhere?

I was watching the Cubs-Rockies game, and it looked and sounded as though there were just as many Cubs fans as Rockies fans in Mile High Stadium. I've noticed this elsewhere, too - it seems like they've got a solid fanbase in every NL city.

Why is that? Is it just that everybody loves an underdog?

Update:

Edit: When you go as long without a ring as the Cubs, I think you're kind of a perennial underdog, regardless of your payroll.

WGN provided nationwide Cubs coverage for the last few decades. People latch onto the teams they see, and the Cubs (and Braves, thanks to WTBS) got a LOT of exposure.

Yes I'm a Cubs fan and I was at the Cubs-Rockies game. There was more Cubs fans than Rockies fans. When the Cubs won, thirty W flags showed up with the background of a sign that read 2009 Rockies. Also, a bar across the street had a sign that read "THIS IS CUBS COUNTRY"

Chicago is a big city and a lot of people grew up there and moved. But more than that, there didn't used to be teams west of Chicago. the Cubs broadcast on a super powerful radio station that could be heard across the nation. A lot of people out west grew up listening to Cubs games and rooting for them from afar. Some of their kids grew up as Cubs fans. Even when new teams like the Rockies came around, many kept their allegiance to the Cubs. And they broadcast on a Super Station that is carried on a lot of cable systems across the country. There are a lot of Western states that still don't have teams and you find a lot of Cubs fans there.

Same thing with the Cardinals who were one of the Westernmost teams for a long time.

The reason that they have so many fans is because no matter where you are in the US, you can watch almost every cubs games. Cubs games are on WGN which is a cable channel and if you dont watch your home team, you could always watch the cubs which is what i believe people do.

Anyone who has seen the cubs play at Wrigley Field becomes passionate about the team because Wrigley is such an intimate experience. Without much foul territory and bullpen, you can see the players close up and you feel part of the experience. It becomes your team because you are practically on the field.

Chicago Cubs fans loves their team, and they love to see them play, even if the game is not at Wrigley Field. But you do have to wonder if they have an actual paying job, since being a Chicago Cubs fan doesn't count as a real job. But don't worry, I hate the Chicago Cubs, and if you hate them just as much as me, then we should hang out together.

that is not the answer, if you want to be a fan of an underdog be a fan of a smaller market baseball team, such as the brewers, or royals. the answer is the same reason why there are so many cowboy fans. Because they flaunt their money as success, even though the team sucks. stupid people think money equals happiness, thus leading them to believe that if they root for that team they will be rich and happy

i agree it seems that everywhere they go their are cubs fans. i have no idea why i just think they enjoy following their team. i think it helps the cubs feela little more comfortable knowing you can hear the cubs fans cheer. i think we have a very solid fan base. we sell out basically every game. its nice to see cubs fan at away games.

"Chicago is a big city and a lot of people grew up there and moved. But more than that, there didn't used to be teams west of Chicago."

I think you need a lesson in baseball history, and geography. I guess you never heard of the Saint Louis Cardinals, and where they're located? Plus, the Dodgers and Giants moved to the West Coast in 1958, before cable tv. The Athletics moved to Kansas City, MO, in 1955, also before cable tv, and the Dodgers and Giants. Then, in 1969, they moved to California, BEFORE cable tv.
