What does it mean when they say . . . ? (baseball)?
When the infield makes a play, like from short to second to first and the announcer says numbers, like 6-4-3 or whatever. What do the different numbers they say actually mean? Do they correspond to the position? I can't quite figure it out.
Ok, thanks everyone! I think the shortstop being 6 is what messed me up. Seems out of order being before 3rd base. I kept trying to compare it to a clock or something but could never make it work :)

each defensive position is assigned a number. The numbers represent who fielded the ball, and where it was thrown in the course of the play. Its easier to say "6-4-3" than to say "Shortstop to second baseman to first baseman"
1 = Pitcher
2 = Catcher
3= 1st base
4 = 2nd base
5 = 3rd base
6 = short stop
7 = left field
8 = center field
9 = right field.
Note, that it does not go in order around the infield, it skips short stop and then comes back.

Example 6-4-3 is simply a double play started by the shortstop who threw the ball to the second baseman for one out, then the second baseman threw the ball to the first baseman to get the other out, thus short to second to first 6-4-3 6 is the shortstop, 4 is the second baseman and 3 is the first baseman that was involved in the play

1. Pitcher
2. catcher
3. First base
4. Second Base
5. Third Base
6. Shortstop
7. Left Field
8. center field
9. Right field.
So the 6-4-3 means the ball went from the shortstop to the second baseman to the first baseman.

yes each player has a specific number: Pitcher-1 Catcher-2 1st Base-3 and so on. They are numbered for ''keeping score'' on an official score card, which makes it much simpler than having to write it out

4- 2nd base
