Galileo Thermometer, please help?

I just purchased one of these for my mothers birthday, as the one she has no longer floats. All the balls sit on the bottom.

The new one just arrived, and all the balls were on the bottom. It has been about 1 hour since i unpacked it and only the red ball (80 degrees) is floating and the others are still on the bottom.

Do i have to wait? Do i have to do something else? Or did i just get my mother a **** present?

Update:

Thanks. I just picked it up to move it and all but one are now floating.

Yes, you have to wait. These thermometers are extremely slow reacting. The temperature in the water and then the glass balls has to change.
