I'm looking for a low-cost, embroidery machine that will sew letters. Any suggestions?

Update:

It can be a sewing machine or an embroidery machine. I just don't have a lot of money and would really like to be able to personalize things.

The least expensive is the Brother 350 sold at Walmart and that is just under $500.

You can call sewing machine dealers in your area and ask if they have embroidery machines that have been traded in for more expensive models.

There are some sewing machines that have built-in letters and numbers, but they are very small and not the same quality as those done with an embroidery machine.

You don't mention your age, but most actual embroidery machines are going to be at least in the hundreds of dollars.

I would be leary of buying a machine from an individual. Most people are getting rid of them, because it didn't do what they wanted.

You might check with a sewing machine business, at times people have repairs done and don't return to pay the bill, or they have trade ins to upgrade their machine.

Keep in mind that the machine is not the only expense with this hobby. You must use special machine embroidery thread, not the little floss skeins that are used for hand embroidery. There is stabilizer that must be used to support the stitches. This is not an inexpensive hobby.

If you are interested in embroidery you might go to the library and check out instructional material. Look at learning hand embroidery. This can be inexpensive, there are many other types of embroidery such as silk ribbon. Good luck to you, I hope this information has assisted you.

Hand embroidery is pretty easy, though it takes a bit of practice to do well: THE ART OF HAND-EMBROIDERED MONOGRAMS

by Pamela Burke Threads Magazine #101: June/July 2002 is a good starter article.

You can also do free motion embroidery with any sewing machine -- again, it just takes practice.

Cheapest embroidery machine I know of starts at about $500; you may be able to find a used one for somewhat less. But I'd encourage you to try some hand embroidery -- many people find it quite relaxing and it's incredibly cheap. <g>

    Hello,

Where about do you live? I have a little sewing machine that will do letters for you and some designs. I am selling it for $300.00. It is really cute. It will only do 2 letters at a time and then you have to put it in place after to add more letters. I wanted something bigger so I bought another embroidery machine with all the bells and whistles...lol.

    Let me know,

    Rose :-)

I buy my machines off of ebay, you can find embroidery machines cheap there and not pay tax and get free shipping! Just make sure the seller has good feedback!

Needle and thread are very inexpensive.
