What are the meaning and origin of "slam dunk"?

I've heard this in American TV programmes broadcast in the UK. It seems to imply completeness, but what exactly does it mean?

it is a move in basketball where a player physically pushes the ball through the hoop, since then it now means all sortsa of things including scoring with a person.

Originally, a "slam dunk" in basketball is when a player propels the ball directly through the hoop using his hands, rather than arching it into the basket. Colloquially, it means something that is easily accomplished. For example, "That obstacle course is a slam dunk."
