Where did the expression "Madder than Hell" come from?

Have you ever felt this way? Why and when?

For me, it happens when a person or animal is abused.

Maybe because that kind of angry is also a little mad in it's rage.

I get that kind of angry over any abuse.

The expression isn't all that special. Adding "...as hell" after an adjective just means taking that adjective to an extreme.

The concept of hell is itself madness.
