If Carl Pohlad bequeathed all his assets to family rather than give anything away, then the Pohlad family, whom own the Twins, are the wealthiest owners. Carl Pohlad was valued at over $3.2 billion, IIRC, when he passed away.

Boston's John Henry is probably second, he's also a genuine billionaire, but I'm not really sure. Pohlad was the unchallenged #1 for a long time.

The Yankees are, easily, the most valuable team (as a capital asset), but that's not the same thing.

Actually, digging a bit further and recognizing that the American economy is still smoldering, the richest owner might be Hiroshi Yamauchi, who holds the Seattle Mariners, benefits from having most of his loot vested in the Japanese economy, and despite being majority owner does not have general control of the team. It's complicated. However, it doesn't seem to bother him that the Mariners are essentially independent of his influence, but when you're sitting atop more money than your next twenty generations of descendants could possibly spend, you can afford to have very, very nice toys and ignore them.

Yamauchi-san was recently valued by Forbes at around $4 billion.
