Congratulations on your period, hope you did something nice to celebrate :-) 14 isn't late at all, there is nothing bad about that.
I don't use tampons, I used to in my teens but I now use a menstrual cup, I'd never even think about using tampons and pads again! Don't use Tampax honey, they are the worst kind to use because they are commercial, that means they are made from rayon and contain chemicals which means they are more unhygenic and unhealthy than other brands as it does more damage to your vagina so higher risk of TSS and infections. Tampax also expand into your cervix adding to cramps, and they have plastic applicators which just means even more damage to the environment. If you are going to use tampons try Cottons http://www.cottons.com.au/ they're better because they are made from cotton so they're softer so making them easier to insert and more comfortable, and they don't contain any nasty chemicals so much healthier as less risk of TSS and infections, also they expand better so they are less likely to leak. Always remember to follow all of the precautions to limit your health risks!
Best tip - GET A MENSTRUAL CUP!
Menstrual cups are small flexible cups you wear during your period, they're much healthier and more sanitary than tampons so you can wear them for 12 hours as they collect flow rather than absorb and don't encourage bacterial growth, so no big risk of TSS or infections. They also hold more flow and have a light seal so don't leak, they can be used with any flow, overnight and while swimming so more convenient and reliable than tampons or pads. To use them you just fold to insert into your vagina and give them a little turn once inserted, then to remove just pull out, clean and reinsert, so they're really easy to use and very comfortable, plus they're also cheaper and much better for the environment. Cups are FAR better than tampons and pads, there is a good little article about cups on Scarleteen http://www.scarleteen.com/article/advice/what_are_... and Lunapads have a good FAQ on their site http://www.lunapads.com/productfaq/divacup.htm
Periods are as good or as bad as you make them, they show you're fertile and healthy, there's nothing embarrissing or gross about periods and nothing you cannot do during your period, they are only bad if you make them bad. Women who think positily about periods learn how to manage them so enjoy their periods, women who think badly about periods don't learn how to manage them so spend their life suffering with their periods. This is a great article about how best to deal with periods - http://www.scarleteen.com/article/body/on_the_rag_...
Know that you don't have to suffer cramps, most women can totally avoid getting cramps all together with things as simple as herbal treatments or diet changes, but if you do get cramps use Clary sage - it's an oil you rub into your tummy, it works far better and faster than painkillers and it helps prevent cramps during your next period.
Note periods on a calandar, also changes to moods and discharge to help understand your menstrual cycles effect on your body and predict periods. Periods can have good effects like more energy or bad effects like cramps, but you can avoid the bad if you learn how.

yea my favorite out of all tampons are the tampax pearl and the for the pads use "always" pads the new kind i forget what they are called but they are in a navy blue box and they look way different then the orgininal lol.
tips: always carry a tampon or pad no matter where u go cuz periods do sneek up on u u dont want to have stains or nothin.
they hurt like hell so buy midol.
sleep with a large pad.
change every 5 hours.
clean ur self alot.
DONT WEAR WHITE!!!or any light color as pants.
use hot pads when u get bloaded.
and sometimes periods cramps can be very painfull and cause u to vomit but rarely.
and no girl there is nothin wrong wit u every girl is different my friend is 16 and just started hers. it can also depend on weither u are althletic as well. i started mine when i was 11 but i wish i didnt. to me it is much better to start it later cuz thats also when ur better about ur hygene as well.
well now ur becoming a woman no that part : )good luck

Wear a tampon during the day and pad at night, tampons are great but shoudnt be worn for more than 8 hours and can sometimes leak, pads are easier but are bulky and can be seen if wering tight jeans, also pads can get smelly where tampons dont
14 is about right age, not bad at all
use a hot water bottle to help your period pains
good luck - you will be fine

My favorite tampons are Playtex Sport. Some people just get their periods late, and almost fourteen isn't bad. I got mine when I was twelve and some of my friends are almost fourteen and still haven't gotten theirs. As long as you have it by sixteen or seventeen things are fine. As for tips, a heating pad has always worked for cramps when I get them and Midol works well for PMS but it has caffeine so it's not the best for nighttime pain if you want to sleep.

CONGRATS,i think lol! I had my first period at 9 years old,so be happy you got it late. I wear pads because sticking things in me freaks me out lol. But tips that i recommend is if you have cramps always be prepared! I have the worst cramps,no one believes me until they see it. That is why i always carry a bottle of advil or aleve because midol does not work for me. When the cramps worsen buy a microwavable heat pad, because it will relax your muscles which will soothe the pain. Take more showers because there is nothing worse than smelling a female on her period and drink lots of water! Also try and eat,if it is difficult try and eat something with lots of calories that will make up for the meals you loss. Get plenty of rest if you can...hope i helped:)

Buy carefree wipes, they're really handy.
Always keep a spare pad and knickers in the side pocket of your handbag.
And make sure you note your cycle in your diary so that you have an idea when its going to come again!
14 is perfect by the way

inform your mum, critically. i did not coz i used to be embarrassed, however she observed my lingerie int he wash. lol. however do not be afraid critically, my mum, the loopy ancient bat, used to be so pleased with me and simply stated 'you are fitting a girl, might you favor to move out to dinner someplace'. your mum will without doubt now not make a fuss embarrass you, she'll be knowledge and useful since she went via the equal factor. um, good, i would advocate discovering a calender or anything that may maintain monitor of your intervals on in order that you recognize while the following one is coming. simply draw a celebrity or write a 'P' and circle it. recall, each and every 28 days from whilst you begin your interval for the month. do not be scared or concerned should you pass a interval or if its a little bit overdue since your frame will nonetheless be adjusting. keep on with pads. and simplest begin utilizing tampons whilst you believe in a position, took me years, since they take a few being used to. well success and loosen up, each and every lady is going via this n_n
