I am getting a new hard drive today when i install it. am I going to lose all the programs I had? Worse yet am I going to lose my Operating system? I don't have disks for anything the computer came with it all on it and no disks. I don't understand.

no you can buy a RAID controller and emplment RAID-1 wich is mirroring and it makes an identical drive but its slow and you need two hard drive for exp if you have 100Gbs if data you will need a total of 200Gbs of memory 100Gbs per hard drive look into it go to your local computer store and ask about it

First and foremost, make sure the hard drive you get has a lot more space on it then your previous hard drive.

Now a "failed hard drive" doesn't necessarily mean that you lost the drive. Perhaps only the boot sector, or just a few bad sectors on the hard drive disk itself.

When you get the new drive, install both hard drives with the new as the master drive. This will depend on if the drive is IDE (w/ ribbon cable) or SATA (w/ a thinner cable). If IDE, you will need to put the old drive on the middle part of the ribbon cable. If SATA, you will need to look at the motherboard for the hard drive connection.

I would probably not take out the old until the new drive is at the pc so you know where to plug in the new drive.

Ok, you have both drives in the PC and connected with the New Hard Drive as the new master, and the old hard drive as a slave.

Install OS (Operating System) onto new hard drive. When this is completed, boot to your GUI (Graphics User Interface). If this is windows, go to [My Computer]. You should see, not only the C: drive, but another drive as well. It will have another letter assigned and will be random depending on your hardware in the system.

If this 2nd disk shows up, then you might be able to get all of your old data on to the new drive. If this drive does not show up, then it is failed and you can take it apart for the very spiffy powerful magnets that are inside.

Another indication of a failed drive, if the drive does show in [My Computer] and when clicked, it asks you to format the drive, then it might be corrupted. Don't despair just yet, try a disk check on the drive first and if that doesn't work, THEN you can despair.

Other items that will help diagnose: Any BSOD's (Blue Screen), these point to either hardware, or drivers.

Any beeps at boot up point to hardware errors.

I hope this helps, good luck.
