I had this problem before and still sometimes. I think what you are trying to do is stepping on the hit. By that you are not shifting right. You are what I call shifting up and stead of forward, kinda like standing up on it. Or you are snapping your left leg for power. In order to stop it. Try rolling your left foot through your follow through. Think shifting forward. Hope that helps.

Keep your feet on the ground both during the back swing and follow through. Feel the weight shift to the inside of the back foot on the back swing and to the outside of the front foot on the follow through. Read Tiger Woods' articles in the Golf Digest where he stresses foot work and its importance in the golf swing.

With irons, You have to stay down, and swing down at the ball. With drivers you have to sweep through. Regardless, both of the times, you have to swing and the weight goes to the front.
Also, a good thing to try is to try to feel like you are leaning forward when you swing, it will help you with this motion
