How do I stop my dog from scratching and biting himself?

My dog has been itching, scratching, and biting non stop for the past 4-1/2 months. Even to the point of rubbing against the bottom of my coffee table. He has either chewed or rubbed off almost all the fur off his backside. He doesn't have fleas, he is an indoor dog.

I have tried benadryl, hydrocortazone and the hot spot lotion, nothing has helped. He now has sores. He goes through this every year. Just as he goes nuts he stops. we haven't been able to find the trigger

I'm using Bactine right now so he can have some relief and can sleep at night but have to wash it off so he doesn't eat it off when he chews again.

Has anyone had this problem? If so, what worked for you?

First you need to see your vet as there is clearly a problem. Does he have fleas? Perhaps he is allergic to his food. Once he's been assessed and is getting the appropriate treatment your vet can give you what is known commonly in the UK as a 'lampshade'. It's a circular plastic disc that fits around the dog's neck so he cannot bite himself. As for the scratching you can either bandage the feet or make him wear little shoes to stop him hurting himself.

First off, you do need to take him to the vet. I know it's not the cheap route but it could turn into a serious problem. Make sure he is up to date on shots. Be very careful taking advice from people online, because you should not take advice from anyone about a animals health issue unless it's a vet. It sounds like it could be a allergy problem, but they actually have a dog form of zurtec, along with many others that could help him. However, it could be something completely different than seasonal, it could be allergies to something in your house. Or it could be worms, or something completely different Get him checked before it becomes more serious.

Good luck I hope he gets better.

Every dog needs some type of training. The first class I ever took a dog to was https://tr.im/6ljiI

It's a very basic kind of class. They will help you with your dog, and show you how to work with your dog at home.

They'll also answer any questions you have about your dog's particular problems and how to handle them. The most important thing in dog training is to be consistent and work with your dog at home on the lessons. The PetSmart class teaches sit, down, come, and the very basics every dog needs to know. They will also help socialize your dog. You are unhappy with an untrained dog, and believe it or not, the dog is actually unhappy to. You need to take your dog now, as the older he gets, the harder it will be to correct your dog's bad habits. Plus the classes are fun for you and your dog. My dog went from that first PetSmart class on to advanced obedience classes. You might also contact your local humane society. The one in my area offers obedience classes with a very good trainer at a reduced price.

I would definitely recommend seeing a vet. Also fish oil / better dog food would help as well. Also make sure (s)he is getting the proper amount of exercise.

    Hope your dog gets better!

    Cheers,

    Dave

well, my in-laws have a choc lab that has really dry skin which makes her scratch and bite herself all the time. One of their vet friends told them to buy some Fish oil pills, and when you go to feed your dog, puncture two pills and pour the fish oil on your dogs food, it will smell gross but your dog will still eat it. do it every time you feed your dog and after about a week you should see improvement

    hi,

Mouthing and biting are natural, normal behaviors; all puppies do it. During teething (generally starting around four months), the urge to mouth is extra powerful because it feels good on your pups' tender gums. Lacking opposable thumbs, puppies also use their mouths to catch, carry, and play, making it all the more crucial that they learn how to control themselves in the presence of human skin.

    here's a treatment:

    hope this helps.

Could be a ton of different things.

Worms, dry skin, food/treat allergy, boredom, anal glands are full.

I had a dog that would chew, and his saliva would dry on his skin, making him itch. A never ending cycle.

Flax Seed Oil - dribbled on his food - was the miracle cure.

    Shiny coat bonus!

    What about Ticks?

Anyway my dog have the same problem, usually he does that when he is bored...so I will just distract him with dog toys, for him to bite. Or just play ball with him
