Our dog killed a bat. Risk of rabies?
Our dog killed a bat yesterday. Really I think the bat was already dead or half-dead when she got it. She did draw blood so I'm sure she got some in her mouth. She is up-to-date on her rabies vaccination, just had her yearly booster in July. So that should protect her if the bat was rabid, right? I just want to be sure. Thanks!
DJL: Are you accusing me of being a troll? I don't know where that's coming from. I'm a responsible pet owner with a serious question.
My dog just had her yearly shots, including a rabies booster so that she is good for that for 3 yrs. Maybe I don't have the terminology correct, but geez!
Sean: My dog IS already vaccinated for rabies!
Thanks. I'm on the phone with the vet now, just to be sure that all will be fine.
EH: Thank you so much for your insight. I did talk with my vet and she doesn't think there is any reason to be concerned because my dog has been kept up-to-date with rabies vaccinations since she's been a pup. We disposed of the bat but I do think I'm going to call our local animal control and see if they want to test it.

When you had the dead bat picked up by county officials when did they say they would have the test results back?
If your dog is up to date he should be ok,
but since there is no such thing as an annual rabies vaccine I question if your dog is up to date on his shots or not.
Call your vet and be sure.

We've had severe outbreak of rabies in raccoons (here). The veterinary protocol if your dog comes in contact with a raccoon (that might be rabid) is to re-vaccinate, even when dog is up to date. But you can call your vet & ask if they agree with this option, before making appt to get the shot or going to a low-cost rabies clinic. The re-vaccination shot must be given within 24 hr of bite, I think.
Your dog is probably covered by the recent rabies vaccine but you might also want to check on YOUR risk, if your dog came in contact with rabies saliva, if you've handled him; cleaned up any blood/liquids or touched the bat in question. If you've still got the bat, call animal control & ask for them to take it for testing & dispose of it. Most counties or every state has a diagnostic lab that runs rabies tests (among other things) for agricultural or health (etc) purposes.

All pet owners should make certain their dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies. When our pets are protected from rabies, it provides a buffer zone of immune animals between humans and rabid wild animals such as bats... Have ur dog checked Immediately!! and vaccinated once done he can protect u from being infected :)

I had this happen once. Unfortunately at the time our area had a bad outbreak in rabies. The local veterinarian asked me to keep my dogs confined for 2 wks and I complied. There was not rabies but, I guess its always better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck

Talk to your vet. Bats carry a high rate of rabies & you will want to be certain. You may have to take bat in for testing. Most likely your dog should be fine but check with professionals.

Just about ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ignorant Chicken Littles LOVE to scramble around & squeal over nothing, don't they?
NOT A PROBLEM!!!
RABIES *must* be transmitted from a RABID animal INTO the blood stream!!!

maybe go just in case to get another checkup, even if it had its shots, if it starts behaving bizzare like as followed:
Excessive Drooling
Shyness of a usually friendly pet
Aggression, or sudden mood changes
Active during night
and maybe Paralysis
You may have a problem on your hands, if any of this happens. hope i helped...

I would have thought so, I would ring the Vet anyway just to be on the safe side.
