Designated for assignment, cleared by waivers?

Can someone explain to me what the whole process is behind assignments, waivers, etc?

Best explanation gets best answer :)

Update:

Specific example: The Rays picked up a new catcher and designated Michel Hernandez for assignment. After a week, he went to The Ray's AAA Durham. Why do they do this rather than just sending him to Durham in the first place?

Designated for assignment is when you might be struggling so a team says there going to send you to the minors to work it out. If you say no then they put you on waivers, and if you clear waivers then they have 10 days to drop or trade you. Cleared waivers mean you were put on waivers for any team to just call and say they want you but no one did.

Designated for assignment means that the players can go on the minor league. OR they can get traded or relased.

Cleared waivers-- every team passed on the player while on the waiver list
