From Penn Station, follow sign to 8th Av Subway Line (A)(C)(E) at 34th St-Penn Station.

Then take uptown (C) to 81st St-Museum of Natural History.

Please note (C) train has less subway cars and there are many weekend construction work that could suspence (C) and (A) replaces (C).

The second and third person are right about taking the PATH. From Newark Penn Station, take the PATH to Journal Square and then walk across the platform to transfer to the train that will take you to 33rd Street in New York. From there you have to walk to the 34th St. Penn Station SUBWAY station. (Not far, only about a block or two). You can take the B or the C to 81st St. or you can take the 1 train to 79th St. PATH is $1.75 each way and the subway is $2. Both accept Metrocards so you should buy a Pay-per-ride MetroCard before you go and fill it with $7.50 for each person who is going. Like the second person mentioned, you do get a discount if you put a certain amount in the card. If it's only 3 people going then you can buy one MetroCard and share it amongst yourselves. However, make sure you don't buy an Unlimited Fun Pass MetroCard because you won't be able to share it and you can't use it on the PATH so it's a waste of money unless you plan on going to a lot of places in New York that day. Kids can travel alone on busses but if you look really young then people might look at you strangely. However if you look 14 or 15 you'll be fine. It's normal for kids that age to take the PATH/subway on their own or with friends. The food in the museum is ridiculously overpriced. I would suggest eating a good meal before you go and then going to a decently priced place or just a fast food restaurant after you leave the museum. However, I think they sell chocolate-covered bugs at the museum if you want to try that. =) I'm not sure how much the museum costs but I'm sure you can find out by looking on their website. It shouldn't be too expensive. The total cost of your trip, per person would be $7.50 + whatever you spend on food + the cost of the museum tickets.
