My hard drive is filling up. Should I delete the recovery files and use that?

Why not simply make recovery DVDs and then use that partitioned part of the hard drive for additional storage? Usually when the PC won't start up anyway, you can't access any part of the hard drive.

Sounds like a viable idea to me...

Update:

Basically, I wanted to know if there was anything wrong with what I suggested...? I realize an external drive is nice but of the 4 PCs we have in our house only one has the hard drive filling up.

Assuming your computer came with a disk you shouldn't need anything from the recovery drive so you can delete it all if you want the space. Otherwise its probably not wise to go deleting anything in there without knowing what you are doing. Relatively speaking 10GB in much of your total space so it wont make much of a difference anyway. As for things not being "fully deleted", when you empty your recycle bin the space is essentially freed for reuse. Files, however, leave behind a magnetic imprint, so to speak, on your hard drive that could be restored by government agencies for example unless you've written over the portion of the hard drive several times. Unless your getting up to dodgy illegal stuff on your computer this shouldn't be a problem.

No because the recovery files contain thing that are not copied to the disk the disk just start the process

what you should do is get an external drive transfer data to that from your hard drive & then defrag your hard drive & just access the external drive keep your internal drive as empty as you can & your computer will run faster & better

Ask yourself this question. Which is most important to me? Saving money by saving my very important files that I have spent hours of my own time own backing up in another partition of my old hard drive or coming up with the bucks to buy an external hard drive that insures that my important files are safe? Your time is money. So if saving money is that important to you then by all means use the recovery files and take that big chance. Life is about chance right?

I have a Maxtor One Touch external drive and its the best thing I've ever bought. I have my files on it and can move it from computer to computer to access my files. You MUST have one!

Not only does it free up space on your hard drive but in case you get a virus, you won't have to worry about loosing precious pictures and data ever.

Or you could get those little USB sticks! some of them have quite a large capacity, you can put your files on them :D

Or like others said and get an external hardrive!

Not that helps you sorry =( But yes look into those little external things, or you can use DVDs

I think the external hard drive is the way to go.

Get the biggest one you can afford!

My desktop currently has a 250 Gb drive now.

Get an external hard drive. They are more useful and don't cost that much. A 250gb hard drive costs around 60 usd amnd it will let you hold and archive more files in one spot instead of buring multiple dvd's.

I have been told by several people to get an external drive. I don't know why I keep procrastinating, because I know better than anyone how depressed I'd be if anything happened to my laptop.

I'm getting teary-eyed just at the thought of it :(

Its way cheaper and less accident prone to just buy a 1tb external harddrive for about 150$ so you never need to worry about storage.
