Why doesn't water spread completely?

When you spill water on a hard surface it spreads a little but still maintains a certain height (try it). What stops it from continuing to spread till is pretty much non existent?

    Think of a rain drop.

    What shape is it?

    Round.

    Reason. Surface Tension.

    Surface Tension pulls it together.

    But surface tension is weak.

So when a puddle spreads out, the edges pull themselves together.

How much the edges pull the water together, is how strong it is.

believe it or not, water is sticky, if it wasnt you could climb into a swimming pool and climb back out and all the water would fall off, so when you spill water the water molicules stick together and thats why it mantains some height
