Do you have to get a pelvic exam to get birth control pills?

I don't want one, they sound unpleasant. So I can just say I don't want one?

Update:

I have really painful cramps when I'm on my period and I'm thinking about talking to my doctor about taking birth control pills to help the pain. I'm still a virgin though, so do I still have to go through a pelvic exam to get the prescription?

Update 2:

Yahoo switched the original details and the added ones, it's being weird.

No, you don't even have to go to a gynecologist. Any doctor can write a prescription for birth control, however, you may want to get a pelvic exam if your cramps are that bad. It could be a sign of ovarian cysts or another condition.

if you are young (maybe 22 and under) they usually will not give you a pelvic exam, given that you are not sexually active. If you are not comfortable with a pelvic exam, they are more likely not have you go through that.

You will have to discuss why you would like birth control (for menstruation, sexual activity, etc.)

If you're a teen, they may not give you a pelvic exam.

You should know the pill does not help with cramps. If you're going to take it for only that, you're wasting your money and your time.

You'll have to take separate meds for those (like Pamprin) or use heat wraps.

I have always had bad cramps. I was on the pill for fourteen years and it did nothing for them. I always had to take Pamprin.

Source(s): I was on the pill for fourteen years and have experience with this so ignore any downthumbs because they haven't.

No I had bad cramps and they gave me birth control pills without an exam.

If they think an issue like cysts or endometriosis is the problem, they might but probably not.

Do you want a pelvic exam? - if not - just decline to have one.

I didn't. She just asked me if I wanted it to regulate my period. And I said yes. She didn't check ''down there'' either. Then she showed me how to use them and then had me sign a paper.

    Good luck.

You should have one anyways, especially if you have painful cramps, because something could be wrong with your reproductive organs.
