Ever seen green fireballs in the sky - well, not fireballs,?

Yes, they are green - no they are not fireballs. They hang in the sky as a comet would on any given night. Imagine Halebopp on closest approach with a lime color. Seen rarely. Is this some kind of atmospheric phenomenon I have not heard of? They disappear after 10-20 minutes - sometimes less than that.

Update:

no - no airports - these light have tails- like a comet - all of one color

Update 2:

The foxfire color is about right, but these things are in the air - hard to say how high - not too high I think

Update 3:

David, you may be on to something - but flares are usually bright and you see the parachute they hang from, etc - these things are just there - getting spectra is a good idea, it would take luck - they don't show up every night

What color are beryllium flares? Or maybe it was barium flares. It's something I heard about a long time ago, and I can't remember details. Barium flares are green. Get some spectra of those things, then open your copy of the MIT Wavelength Tables, and you might find out what it is.
