How important are 3d layers in Adobe After Effects?

Im about to blow up on my teacher who doesn't seem to know a lot about after effects. every week, we must build something with 3d layers, like a cube or something. i get the importance, but i feel like hes using them in the wrong way... let me know what you think, or if im completely wrong. because for our final, i literally have to create a UFO made out of 3d solids! i feel like he wishes it was 3ds max or something

3d layers in AE are used to add depth, and they are useful in having something like missile trials and meteor smoke tail, which could be made by using trapcode particular plugin ,in the same way they are used in stylish text movements in 3d for titles, they are useful in motion tracked 3d layers and of course they are used in making a simple geometry useful for small movements, like a text in a room lit by a AE light for titles which creates depth.

    >>I suggest 3dS max or blender or maya for modelling UFO,and AE is not suitable,AE comes to play as name suggests in giving final touches of color correction so that it matches with the scene, and having smoke, and other effects, and helpful in inserting the png sequence from 3DS Max which is created after motion tracking the scene using Boujou, into the original footage.
