Ramadan: Islam and Non Muslims?
Modern welfare states provide social benefits to their poor citizens, but Islam preceded all nations in establishing social security services. Islamic law set up financial provisions for needy Muslims through zakah (obligatory charity) and sadaqa (voluntary charity). Zakah was made obligatory on wealthy Muslims to take care of the poor, whereas sadaqa was left on individual discretion to help the needy. Social security provided by Islam includes non-Muslims as well. Islamic Law requires the state to provide for its citizens with disabilities – Muslim or non-Muslim - that prevent them from employment. They are provided for by the public treasury and the ruler is negligent if he does not do so. Many instances of Muslims providing social security to the non-Muslim citizens are recorded in history. Umar ibn al-Khattab the second caliph of Islam, once passed by a old, blind man begging in front of a house. Umar asked him which religious community he belonged to. The man said he was Jewish. Umar then asked him, ‘What has brought you to this?’ The old man said, ‘Do not ask me; ask …poverty, and old age.’ Umar took the man to his own home, helped him from his personal money, and then ordered the head of the treasury, ‘You must look after this man and others like him. We have not treated him fairly. He should not have spent the best years of his life among us to find misery in his old age.’ Umar also relieved him and others in his situation of paying the jizya.

I don't know about the history of muslim welfare, but modern western welfare states do not do this.
The governments are in charge of taking and distributing the money for the welfare of people. Look at how much money they bring in. Now look at how much of that is not spent on the good of the people. Notice we in america have more than enough to provide a shelter and food to every person who does not have it, yet not only do you still see homeless people on the streets and hungry people in their homes, but a large majority of homeless shelters and food banks are private organizations getting no help from the government to begin with.
The truth people do not want to see is that the welfare of a nations people will only be solved by private charity, not by government sanctioned welfare or wealth distribution.
Yet people in the west are for the most part lazy. They wish not to take personal responsibility for the welfare of others. They would rather give their government that responsibility, and then blame their government when people do not get the help they need, and blame their government for squandering their money.
The problem with your story about the man who ordered the treasury to look after those who need it, is that not all those who have the power do such request these types of things. They request personal projects be funded first, projects which do nothing for the poor. While I know this is the case in the west, I'm sorry to say I doubt it is much different in the east. Muslim individuals may be more charitable as a people, but I see their governments just as greedy as western governments.
Muslims have a better chance of taking care of the needy not because of their government and it's hand-outs, but because as private citizens charity is more a part of their life than the people of many other nationalities and religions.

I just don't follow the religion - I am a Christian :) I don't have a problem with people being Islam though because everyone has the right to believe what they want. I personally think Islam can be a little sexist at times, but then I guess I don't really understand why so I shouldn't comment on it whilst I don't know why.

Yes thank you for bringing up this point,it is a tragedy of modern life (especially in the west)that so many people suffer both ill health and poverty,or old age and poverty. If you are unable to work due to something which is out of your hands, there should be a system to protect you.But sadly the systems such as welfare and medicare have failed, and so many suffer.
Its also tragic that the rich are doing very little to help the poor, instead they throw million dollar parties and live a life of excess ignorant to the fact so many suffer.Few people realize how merciful and comprehensive Islam really is,how it has a solution to every problem within society.~Tarre

Yes, yes, Islam is wonderful, full of compassion etc etc . We've heard all this cr*p before.
You claim that muslim terrorists do not represent "true islam".
But, you can't deny that your faith seems to produce a very large number of terrorists.
Admit the truth. Kill the infidel, suppress women etc etc.

Until the average moslem starts taking to the streets and protest the action being taken in their name, in the name of their god, by their co-religionists then we have no alternative to consider all of you potential terrorists.
Your continued silence can only be seen as tacit approval of the actions comitted by your brethren.

So, apart from sycophantic praise for the wonderful religion that gives us Bin Ladin, the Taliban, forced marriages and honour killings, what is your actual question/
