Smith may be a more talented offensive player, but Ariza's defence is better, he's gradually adding an outside shot into his game, and he generally seems like a harder worker and a more complete basketball player. If you were to ask me who would explode for 40 points on any given night out of those two i'd probably say Smith, but Ariza looks to have a more concrete and solid NBA career ahead of him.

Trevor Ariza because he is more young and athletic then J.R. Smith. All J.R. does is jack up long threes and airball them. Ariza is a real good defensive player and he also knows when to shoot and when to not. The only thing Ariza does bad is making a decision; an example is when he decided to leave the Lakers for those Rockets which everyone knows are gonna be bad. I guess he just wanted the money and not another championship....
This is the best answer pleazz give me 10 points cuz i typed a lot.

Those who say ariza has more potential than jr smith dont watch basketball. Jr smith has all the potential in the world if he had a brain. When was the last time you saw a guy off bench score 40 plus points. Ariza is a nice player, but he is vastly overrated because he played with the best player in the league.

I'm going with Trevor Ariza, but neither have stardom written on themselves.
Ariza benefited so much from Kobe. The amount of open three pointers he was able to garner was unbelievable. Nothing about his offense screams "all-star." He's a great knock down three point shooter as he showed in the playoffs, but he is very average in just about everything else. Hell, he's even inconsistent finishing at the hoop, which is rare for a guy with his size and athleticism.
His defense is great. He's not at the top right now in the NBA in terms of perimeter defense, but he certainly is one of the more clutch defenders and truly lets his game speak for himself.
JR Smith is a talented, talented player. There's no denying that. However, he is just way too inconsistent and one dimensional to ever be more than a spark off the bench. He jacks up a lot of shots and lets his emotions get the best of him at times.
When he's on his game, he's up there with the best in terms of scoring. Unfortunately, for how good he is when he's hot, he just as bad when he's cold. It evens out.
