Why can you only be flexible or strong but not both?

I don't understand how that works. I was saying that it was frustrating me that I can only do flat splits with my left leg in front and I've been working towards my right splits for years but I can't seem to do it. And my cousin (quite a reliable source) told me it's because I have too much hamstring muscle. I've heard that from other people too. How does that work?

Update:

ok well I think the problem here is that I'm not actually a dancer. I just had a dancer question. haha I'm a catcher for my softball team, so I do have pretty big leg muscles and is that really keeping me from getting any more flexible than I am? I'm not like a board or anything....

You CAN be strong and flexible! The best dancers are both.

Muscle strength allows everything to stretch more, giving better flexibility.

On the other hand, if some muscles are OVERLY developed, you'll just be musclebound and rather stiff indeed.

    It's a matter of balance.

Um I worked for 6 years to get my left leg split and I've been in both gymnastics and ballet. 3 years gymnastics, got the right, 4 years now ballet got left just a few months ago. Dancers are quite strong and flexible. People tend not to give them enough credit. Don't worry about a split not coming overnight, it just takes consistent practice. Dancers have ungodly amounts of leg muscle ad that certainly doesn't keep any of us from being flexible. Keep trying and it'll happen when you lest expect it, honestly.

You can be both. That's totally not true. Professional dancers MUST be both strong and flexible. Look how cut the professional ballerinas are!

BTW: To get your splits you need to stretch every day, and it may still take a couple years.

it is possible to be both, but at least for dancers the challenge is either your born verry strong but not verry flexable or vice versa. to acheve both you must do strenghtaning exercises and lots of streching. dances need both, your strong leg muscles will not keep you from getting flexable.
