Are there apprenticeships for tall ship sailing?
I've been interested in sailing on a tall ship for years now, but all the sail training programs I've found are way too expensive. My budget, being currently between colleges and without a job, is essentially zero. I would LOVE an apprenticeship-type arrangement, where I would work for free while learning the ropes. I'm in Connecticut and could really only travel far if I was going to be staying on the ship. Does anyone know of any apprenticeships or inexpensive sail training programs in the Northeast? I'd also go for a trainee crew position or something where I'd mostly be doing cleaning or whatever but still learning to sail on the side. I don't have much experience at all, just tons of enthusiasm.

Check out this site http://tallships.sailtraining.org/
Try to find a listing of Tall Ships with an east coast home port. Most ships have websites, and many offer trainee programs.

Possibly the best training of all is at Square Sail Shipyard, in the UK.
To quote from their website, "The Square Sail certificate in Square Rig Seamanship offers the only formal, comprehensively structured training available to persons wishing to pursue a career in the ‘Tall Ship’ industry. Previously there were very limited opportunities for training of this sort either in the UK or abroad. It was possible to join various ships and ‘do square-rig sailing’ but not learn real Square Rig Seamanship. Our aim is to turn out competent professional crew for both the private and commercial sailing industries."
Unfortunately the course is not free, and neither is it in your own country, but if you can find any means of raising the necessary funds it is well worth considering.
Can you get grants for training, from your government or any other source?
Hope this helps.
