Which brand clarinet is better?
My daughter is a 2nd year music student and we are buying her either a Yamaha YCL 250 or a Selmer CL301 clarinet? Which one is better? Or do you have a better suggestion?

I would prefer a Buffet clarinet. If she is going to be playing for a long time, buy a R-13 professional model, which is expensive. If not, an E-11 might work. You should try out each clarinet before buying because each clarinet is different, even if it is the same model.

I played symphony clarinets for 40 years and sold my Buffets for a Ridenour Lyrique and love it!

It has a better, more even sound and pitch than most Selmer, Buffet and Leblanc clarinets and is not wood so it will never crack but the sound color is as nice as wood. Also it comes with a fine mouthpiece. Tom Ridenour designed clarinets at Leblanc and started his own company.
It wouldn't hurt to look into it. Tell Tom KenL Sent you.

I played the clarinet for years and to me the biggest feature of a clarinet is what it was made out of. The two clarinets that you are looking at are made of the composite plastic material. Yeah it plays and there may not be much difference, but if your daughter is serious about her playing and plans on doing it for a while you should probably look at one that is made out of wood. The wooden clarinets offer a warmer sound and tone.
