Statute of limitations on laid off employee?

Work laid me off and gave me my final check. 17 days later I get an email that says you owe us for back health insurance premiums. Aren't they supposed to have all that crap settled before they give you your final check? And if their statement is correct, do I have to pay them or is it their loss?

You have to pay them for anything they paid you in error. That's the law.

Just because they made a mistake doesn't mean you can keep the money; that is called stealing once you know it isn't yours.

If you don't pay them, they can sue you for compensation. Unless it is several hundred dollars I doubt they would go to the trouble of suing you.
