Please realize that designing something or in your case redesigning something is not a matter suitable for an everyday Joe. That's why we have professional designers that can take a look at something and instantly know what's wrong with it but it's never easy to make it look good. Also be aware that proper design most of the time requires you to fork over some big bucks.

Design is not easy. Its hard to tell you what to do without seeing the site, but if you asking on here id imagine its not great.
here's a foolproof method of designing a site...
Start again.
Go out and buy 'don't make me think'. Its all about layout and good site navigation. Read it. Understand it. Apply it.
Look at popular websites. Clearly your not a designer, so find an appealing site and copy the layout.
Write some good, relevant content so it indexes well and use what you know to drive users to your site.
Alternatively pay a designer and a developer to come up with something innovative and unique. Wait 3 weeks. Done.

Well I can't really tell you how to improve your design without seeing your actual site. If you can post a link to your site, or if it isn't uploaded to the web yet, email the files of your website to me and I'll respond with my opinion on what you should do.

There is a thing called Drupal. It has website templates to make it look better and stuff like that. right now my site is down, It's called suzarox.com, you can look at that when the server is running. I hope that helped. O, and also Joomla.
