How long should Citalopram (generic Celexa) take to kick in?
I will be calling my doctor this afternoon about this, but I also wanted to see if anyone had experience with this drug.
I've never taken a prescription drug other than antibiotics and asthma inhalers, and I haven't used either one of those in over 12 years, so I'm very nervous about taking them, and I'm not sure if my reaction was just nerves, a normal reaction, or an adverse reaction. I don't know if taking just one pill would actually do anything anyway, so I just need some advice.
Citalopram was prescribed to me yesterday, and I took my first one last night. Last night I had a dream that I was taking ecstasy with the characters in the book I was reading before bed. When I woke up, I was drenched in sweat, and then had anxiety and couldn't sleep for a couple hours. Today, I woke up feeling cloudy and "not me", had to go get blood work, had an anxiety attack in the office, stayed until I cried (totally effing embarrassing), then came home. I feel a little better now.
Could that be the drug, or could it be that it hasn't started working yet, and I'm anxious about making the change to pharm. drugs?
Thanks everyone, so much, I felt better just reading your replies. It's hard to pick the best answer.

I was on celexa for 1.5months. I started to feel the medication in 1 week. It worked great and stopped my anxiety attacks. BUT i stopped taking it cuz of one side effect.. NO SEX DRIVE! I was on 10mg for 4 weeks and then my doc increased it to 20mg. I had a less sex drive while on 10mg, but on 20mg it completely disappeared. I was in a relationship at the time and no sex was not cool at all. So i thought to myself, "i am too young to not have a sex drive, (28y/o)", so i stopped taking the medication and turned to alternative techniques to relieve my anxiety, ie: yoga, exercising, vitamin b-complex, diet. And so far its worked.
But just to let u know that low to no sex drive side effect does not happen to all people. What ur describing u had when u woke up is just ur body getting used to the medication. Give it time and u'll be fine. When u start feeling anxiety try to do breathing techniques or the "tapping therapy". I find that tapping therapy works. U can google it. It may sound bogus to u, but it actually does help. Goodluck to u!

I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me.
The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all.
It'll take 4 to 6 weeks for the Citalopram to reach its "full effective" level, but you should start feeling it work after a couple weeks.
A lot of people take Wellbutrin SR with their SSRI's (Lexapro, Citalopram), it helps to counteract some of the side effects of the SSRI's - such as drowsiness, weight gain, and the sexual side effects. It helps a lot!

I dont believe it to be the medication but only your own anxiety causing that to happen. Citalopram is like other anti depressant/anxiety medications and will not reach full effect for up to 4-6 weeks. You will however feel the side effects of it first such as the clowdyness, drowsiness, etc. Talk to your doctor if this continues for more than 3 days.

its good that you felt you were better and didnt need the meds. however, you should have winged your self off of them, not cold turkey. take a smaller dose, and gradually be rid of them. however, depression is a serious matter, especially at a young age as yourself. You need to develop your own style of learning to cope and deal with lifes' dalima's. because the older you get, the more stress will be out there. Force your self to laugh in the mornings when you wake up. come running in the kitchen like you're going to a fire. jump up and down. your mom will think there's something seriously wrong with you, but just laugh! laughter is the cure to a lot of drepressed individuals.
