  • Low sugar fudge recipe hints?

I need to make some fudge for the base of a peanut butter pie (it's like a giant Reese's cup). I made it last week, and it was good, except the fudge was too sweet. I used a recipe for simple fudge - it was just confectioners sugar, butter, milk and baking chocolate powder. I reduced the sugar slightly, but not too much because I was afraid it would alter the consistency. Is there something I can do to reduce the sugar, like maybe use something in it's place? I've only made fudge that one time, so I really have no idea.

I tried to google recipes, but all I could find were recipes using sugar substitues. I don't want a substitute, I just want it to be less sweet while still having the consistency of fudge.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

  • What % alcohol is needed to "preserve" a product?

For instance, a homemade hand sanitizer or an all-purpose cleaner? What percent alcohol would be sufficient to sanitize?

Or any liquid product containing water.

I've been searching for hours, from google to a college database of journals, and I'm not having any luck.

Does anyone know the amount, or can anyone lead me in the right direction of a good source for this information?

  • B12 deficiency and anxiety?

I've recently been prescribed anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication, but I'm wondering if there's more I can do. I've been reading about vitamin deficiencies and most of my anxiety symptoms are the same symptoms as a b12 deficiency. From what I understand, most people are not deficient because our bodies need such a small amount of b12, but I'm a vegetarian. I eat dairy and eggs, but dairy only about once a week and eggs about once a month. Would this be enough b12, or is there a chance I'm deficient?

I have a doctor's appointment in 2 weeks, so I'll be asking her then, but I just wanted to ask around here first.

  • Shelf life of a substance?

I guess this a chemistry problem..

If you mix two equal amounts of substances together, one with a 1-year shelf life and one with a 2-year shelf life, will the final product have the shelf life of the shorter substance, or longer?

For example, mixing olive oil and hemp oil. Olive has a longer shelf life, but would it help preserve the hemp oil or would the hemp oil cause the olive oil to have a shorter shelf life?

  • I just need some positive anxiety/depression "success" stories..?

I've suffered from minor (aka, short-lived, but on and off) depression for 15-20 years, and started getting anxiety and panic attacks about a year and a half ago. The depression sucks, but it's only really bad for a day or two then goes away for weeks, so I've always just dealt with it. The anxiety has changed my life for the worse. I'm too scared to do anything, and I hate being alone. I've turned anti-social and really only leave the house because I have to go to work or school (adult student). When I do leave, I get stuck with the anxiety.

I've been completely holistic for 12 years, but nothing worked for the anxiety, so I decided to suck it up and go with meds. I'm petrified of them changing my personality, or becoming addicted, but I think I'm more petrified of living the way I have been for the last year and a half.

I've been prescribed celexa and ativan.. celexa for daily use and ativan for emergency use. I'm very scared, and as anyone who's had anxiety knows, being scared of taking something that's supposed to help not be scared, is a tricky situation.

I've been reading about those two drugs, but I'm in need of a few good stories about them. Positive ones, please.. I can't handle any negative feedback on these right now!

Anyone have any success stories about celexa and ativan, or really any anxiety success stories?

  • How long should Citalopram (generic Celexa) take to kick in?

I will be calling my doctor this afternoon about this, but I also wanted to see if anyone had experience with this drug.

I've never taken a prescription drug other than antibiotics and asthma inhalers, and I haven't used either one of those in over 12 years, so I'm very nervous about taking them, and I'm not sure if my reaction was just nerves, a normal reaction, or an adverse reaction. I don't know if taking just one pill would actually do anything anyway, so I just need some advice.

Citalopram was prescribed to me yesterday, and I took my first one last night. Last night I had a dream that I was taking ecstasy with the characters in the book I was reading before bed. When I woke up, I was drenched in sweat, and then had anxiety and couldn't sleep for a couple hours. Today, I woke up feeling cloudy and "not me", had to go get blood work, had an anxiety attack in the office, stayed until I cried (totally effing embarrassing), then came home. I feel a little better now.

Could that be the drug, or could it be that it hasn't started working yet, and I'm anxious about making the change to pharm. drugs?

  • How can I discourage mice from hanging out in my apartment?

I don't want to use traps. Not even humane traps. I just want to keep them away. I'm not even sure why they like it here, because after a pantry moth issue last year, all our food is keep in air-tight (and bug/mouse-proof) containers. About an hour ago, I put out a cotton ball, with peppermint essential oil on it, right under the hole the mouse goes in and out of, and right before I opened up Y!A to post this, I saw him, called him a little $%*#er, and watched him go into the hole with no hesitation. I can smell the mint from here, but he didn't seem to mind it. Or, maybe he was just so freaked out from me yelling at him, that he had to force himself through. I don't know.

Oh, and my friend downstairs also has mice in her apartment.. She told the landlord and the landlord put poison out in the basement. I'm totally against that, but they both wanted it.

The little guys are kind of growing on me, especially since they're smart enough to avoid the poison and aren't in my place for food, but realistically I don't want to share my living space with them. Any suggestions? I'm at a loss..

  • How do I check if water is charge balanced?

I have a list of elements, and a list of their concentrations in ppm.

Is it just the cations=anions or do I need to use their concentrations? Should I convert ppm to something else?

I have no examples to look at and when I google it, I just get abstracts.

    Can anyone help?

  • Drawing a line with only its slope?

I can't for the life of me figure this out! I've been looking online and can find the whole y=mx+b thing for finding the slope, but I can't find anything that explains how to draw a line if you only have the slope. I haven't taken this type of math in over 10 years and this is driving me crazy!

Is it possible to only have a slope and work backwards? Or do I need more information and that's why I can't figure this out?

  • Can anyone explain to me what a clastic wedge is?

I've looked in books, and on google, but I can't find a simple explanation. I "get" that it's sediments eroded and deposited near an area of uplift, but does anyone have a better explanation that will help me understand what exactly it is?

  • White Ladybugs?

I had a few spottings (ha!) of white ladybugs around my yard, and at first I thought it was a freak thing.. Well, today I was cutting down my phlox and I noticed about 20 of the little bugs, in different stages of life. They look identical to ladybugs, in all stages, only they're black and white (the adults are white with black spots) and they're a little smaller than a regular ladybug. Are these actually ladybugs or something else? The plant they're living on is full of holes, but I don't know if they're eating the plant, or, if like ladybugs, they're the bugs that are eating the plant. Does anyone know what these are?

  • Why do you buy "Green" products?

I'm doing a paper for a class and the topic I've picked is "marketing natural products to green consumers". I need some ideas other than my own.

What catches your eye? Are there particular brands you trust? Or don't trust? Do you take packaging into consideration? Or distribution distance? Do you look into companies or trust word of mouth/the package/advertising?

Really, any thoughts on Green products (other than a debate whether or not to use them-it's irrelevant to me) would be helpful.

Oh, and by "products" here, I'm talking about little things like natural shampoo, eco-friendly dishwashing soap, recycled paper, etc. Just regular household products that you've replaced with environmentally friendly alternatives.

    Thanks!

  • What are the disadvantages of solar power?

Other than cost? I'm helping a friend with a project promoting solar power, and I need to find the down sides of solar power in order to refute them, or at least show that the good outweighs the bad. Any suggestions?

I'm looking for things such as the waste from producing PV cells, storage problems, really anything that someone would say to argue against solar power, but I need detailed information.

I'll be doing a bunch of research on my own over the next couple weeks, but any kind of help would be appreciated.

  • A question for the GW deniers..?

Yes, I called you deniers, and you'll just have to deal with it (it has nothing to do with the Holocaust as someone mentioned once!). And to the skeptics- if you are generally just skeptcial because you don't totally understand what's going on, then I'm not referring to you.

Just the deniers. You know who I mean.

Can you give me three reasons why GW does not exist? BUT, can you do it without mentioning Al Gore or liberals?

  • A question for all GW debaters...?

    And a challenge..

The question is how many of you are scientists?

The challenge is to not turn this into yet another debate and just answer the question.

I've asked the same question to the skeptics, but this one is for everyone...

There are so many people on Y!A who are adamant in their opinions about GW who appear to have little or no knowledge of the sciences.

I'm curious how many GW debaters out there are scientists (either by career, long-standing hobby, or are scientists-in-training). I'm not talking about climate experts, just anyone who may have a little more experience in analyzing scientific data, and more knowledge of how things in the environment fit together, than the average person. I'm also not suggesting that non-scientists shouldn't have an opinion, I'm JUST WONDERING how many on here are invovled in the sciences.

If you are a practicing scientist, could you briefly describe your scientific background (your focus, years of experience, etc)?

    14 AnswersGlobal Warming1 decade ago
  • Why do you try so hard to convince others that GW is not real?

So you don't support the theory of Global Warming, for whatever reason (not "enough" evidence, you hate Al Gore, it snowed today, etc).

Why do you make such a point in saying it's not true, when most supporters just want better treatment of the environment?

    I just don't understand...

What do you find so offensive about the idea of people wanting to conserve resources or minimize pollution?

Why are you so opposed to a more environmentally friendly way of life?

(All the "you"s are directed specifically towards the people on here who vehemently oppose the very concept of GW, not the general skeptics)

  • How to politely correct someone who says the wrong phrases..?

Someone I love says things like "intensive purposes", "at the same time period", and "I could care less". It drives me crazy, and I'd like to correct him, but in a way where he will take the least offence and I could spare him any embarrassment. Any suggestions?
