EDIT: All of the people suggesting "Carpenter Ants" need to learn before they speak. There are many kinds of "big black ants" that may visit a house or be accidentally carried in besides carpenters. Carpenter ants DO NOT EAT WOOD, and they like to live in ROTTEN WOOD, NOT the LUMBER THAT a house is built out of.

big black ants are carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.) and are noteworthy because they can damage homes under some circumstances. The key to identifying a carpenter ant is usually size (at least in the US). Carpenter ants are generally, but not always, the largest ants most people will encounter.

My first guess would be carpenter ants. This is a good reason to call in a pest controller, as carpenter ants can do a great deal of damage to a house in a relatively short span of time. Get them checked out and if necessary, cleaned out.

theyre everywhere. i think theyre carpenter ants. or theyre ants on steroids... mutated termites... ten bucks theyre carpenter ants. i think thyre kinda like termites... u know like they eat wood or something? im not sure. thyre not good tho and theyre really annoying. my cats eat them tho... so its all good i guess :D
