Why won't check engine light come on?

1998 Mustang. Has my car smogged today, failed for two reasons, no check engine light and no speed sensor. The speed sensor I knew already, the speedometer has been dead, but never found out why. The check engine light not coming on was a surprise. Related?

I took out my dash and checked the bulbs, I actually switched the chck engine bulb with the seatbelt bulb, one I knew was good. Still didn't come one, so not a bulb issue. Oddly when I had everything hooked back up and started my car, my theft light kept flashing. I accidentally stumbled upon a backlight for my instrument panel, which was pretty cool to see, not sure how I got it to turn on but it will defiantly make night driving easier.

So, what causes the check engine light not to come on? And is it related to the dead speed sensor? Is there maybe some electrical issue in the instrument panel causing these quirky problems?

Please be detailed, I'd like to check these things out myself if possible.

ya know when ya turn the key to the unlock position, and all your dash lights come on? well, if you know the bulb is good, trace the circuit. put the key in the unlock position and put a voltmeter on the leads that your engine light plugs into. see if you get a voltage. if not, then trace this circuit back to the problem. it will be handy to purchase a wiring schematic for your car. BTW, its not related to the speed circuit.

I would think a fuse-able link is kaput. Those are not really hard to track down with a simple Voltmeter.

I have no idea what a speed sensor is, I do know what an Odometer is and I do know what a Speedometer is, those are normally a physical cable that runs to the Transmission. Some modern ones use magnets and sensors around the Axle.

Get a Chiltons or Haynes manual for that car, it is nearing Classic and in 5 years or so will be an antique.

Recheck the oil point on your dipstick returned basically to verify your oil exhibits comprehensive. Then have the blunders codes examine out out of your pc at an AutoZone save close to you. or you will could desire to take it right into a restore save to have they diagnose the examine engine gentle worry codes. this is probable a twist of fate. you should circulate returned to the save that replaced the oil and notice what they say. If any pink sprint lamp comes on, you should pull right into a restore save on the instant. you may force the motor vehicle to the restore save with a yellow examine engine gentle on.
