Question about horse stables?
My husband andi just bought a place in Connecticut and recently bought 3 horses. We bought over 100 acres with a mansion & guesthouse. Since we have so much property we were thinking of building a stable for our horses and 2 goats with a riding area and trail. Would this be alright? Since were not originally from Connecticut we don't know if people who live in big houses like outs have stables. Is it tacky? Should we just keep them at a stable place. We would love to spend time with them everyday which is why we want a stable at the back of our property.
If you answer the question, thanks for the help.

So long as you have enough land and your land is zoned to allow a stable on your property, I think it's fine to build a barn on your property. If you live on enough land, your neighbors should be far enough away that they wouldn't care. You should probably check with the city you live in to make sure there's no ordinances against it and you need a building permit and stuff. Other than that, go for it.

Do make sure you check with your "city, town, county" to make sure its alright to have it. Being in Connecticut it should be absolutely fine because they are known for some very fine stables with great breeding lines and winners. You have a hundred acres as well which means that you have enough room to care for them, let them free range feed too if you need to. Be sure that once you know that you can build one that you get any permits that you may need, and get a list of codes so that way you're building everything to the fireman's code or they'll make you tear it down and fine you so much you'd have to take out another mortgage!
My personal opinion would be to build a large stable, large enough to house maybe 10 or more horses, with a tack and wash rooms, and perhaps an area that would house feed/hay or both, so that way its not out in the weather. I can't count how many times I've seen an alphalfa (hay) fire happen because the sun beat down on wet bundled hay get out of control. It happens in a heartbeat and theres nothing anyone can do about it but keep it contained and burn itself out (thats what the firefighters have to do) I suggest this because by doing this you'll be able to board horses, maybe even give riding lessons which will eventually pay off the stable, and possibly help towards your house payment. Then in the long run, you have the room for if you get more of the most amazing creatures.
I commend you for what you're doing (you're living my dream) horses are a lot of work and cost a lot of money to care for but in the end its all worth it.
I hope this helps

Cheryl, I'm sure that the zoning laws would permit a stable, and a well-built stable that goes along with the design of your house and guesthouse will add to the value of your property.
That said, I have to tell you that it sounds as if neither you nor your husband has much experience keeping horses. It can be fun to have them right at hand to ride and care for, but it can also be a millstone around your neck. Horses need a lot of care. They need to be fed on a regular schedule everyday, more so than most animals, or they can become sick with colic; you can't change the quantity or quality of their food suddenly, or they can become sick; if they're kept in stalls, the stalls need cleaning every day and the horses have to be exercised.
If you can manage that, that's great; if you can afford to hire someone to care for them, that's great too. It's the care aspect of keeping horses that causes most people who board at a stable to keep horses away from their home.
When you board a horse, you entrust them to the management of someone who understands their needs for care and feeding, and who manages things like getting the stalls mucked out daily and assures that if you can't get to the stable, the horses get out for exercise and are groomed.
If you keep horses yourself, it's much harder to do things like go away on vacation or even just go out for a day, because you have to make sure that the horses are cared for in your absence.
If you can swing taking care of them yourself on your property, you should have a lot of fun. Get a good architect who is experienced with designing barns and stables draw up the plans for a stable for you, have a good contractor build them and then enjoy "horse-keeping." Good luck!

Boy I wish I had your decisions!!! As long as you build within any planning requirements for where you are, I can't see it's anybody else's business. And you can always put up tree screening if what you build offends anybody's eyes. But with 100 acres to locate your stables in, frankly who is going to actually see your stable building.
In the UK you have to submit plans when you apply for building consent, so what people put up hopefully doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Can't imagine it's much different where you are.
As I say, I should be so lucky!

i would be sooo jealous if you get a stable!! haha no that is not tacky at all. And it doesn't even need to be an all-out stable, you could just get a decent barn. i think that would be really cool. and why waste the money by boarding somewhere else when you have all that land? it would be perfect to see your horse every single day.

No, I don't think it would be tacky, and honestly it would probably be your best option because to board three horses somewhere would cost you a fortune when you are lucky enough to have the option of them by your home. This way you could be with them everyday and if the maintenence of the horses gets to be too much hire a stablehand, it will still be MUCH cheaper then boarding in Conneticut.

Check with your city and county codes , you may or may not be allowed to have horses
As far as being tacky that depends upon the neighborhood and the people you associate with Here it's no big deal as long as you can take care of them

How lucky are you!!Of course you can have your own stables on your land, that would be ideal! You may have to look into planning permission though,I live in England & we have to get permission here by law.
It's not tacky in the least,it's the most practical solution to do when you have your own horses.
