2004 Ford F-150 Lariat Making A Ticking Noise?
2004 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4L 4x4 Crew cab
I went and test drove this truck last night. I noticed when I started it up there was a ticking noise coming from under the hood while it was running. After driving it for about 5-10 minutes we ended up back at the car lot and I brought the noise to the sales guys attention. He told me it was a normal sound for all 5.4L fords. I thought normal sound is smooth and no clicking or knocking noises. This truck is a lot of money and I don't want to buy it if it is going to break down in 3 months.
Does anyone have an idea of what the sound might be?

If the noise is from the engine, do not buy if they are asking a lot of money, My experiance is a car salesman will lie at the drop of a hat for a sale. If its not in the motor but outside of it, make the salesman fix it FIRST, do not sign any papers untill it is fixed.

I have a 2004 F-150 Lariat, 5.4, 2 WD, extended cab, and I don't have any ticking noises coming from mine. (67,000 mi). That's NOT normal.
If you want this truck, get some sort of extended warranty from the dealer, or look for another.

Sounds like that 3-valve Triton.
The salesperson is feeding you a line of garbage, but those Tritons are known for this cam phaser tick.
I wouldn't touch anything but the 4.2L v6 in an F-150, but you can google about this issue.
Of course, then you have the problem of getting those spark plugs out without leaving half of them broken in those 3-valve heads as well.
Fun.

Could be a loose rocker arm. Could also be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. If you really like the truck take it to a independent tech and let them have a look.

Depends how loud, roller rocker arm frozen, valve lifter, but it the hood is up you hear it, hood is down still hear it then their might be something wrong. If you have to put your ear in the fender well to hear it, there's nothing wrong

neutral party to look at it.preferably a mechanic. cause from here it could be mice.you know they make a ticking noise like this,ie;"tick"you hear it.

It is most likely lifter noise and one or more needs replaced
Have your mechanic check it out be for you buy it
