Anyone else feel sorry for Draco Malfoy?

i mean, the only reason he's considered a bad person is because of the moral's he's grown up with. no one's ever tried to teach him something different than what his mom and dad did, and they were death eaters. but when it came right down to it, draco didn't want to kill dumbledore in the 6th book, even though he would always talk about how he was the worst headmaster hogwarts ever had.

and in the 7th book, he kinda covered for harry hermione and ron, by not telling the death eaters who they were [anyone else remember this part?].

haha yeah sorry random...

opinions?

Update:

i do get what you guys are saying, but he's been brought up around slytherin's his whole life, so his instinct is whatever they've said to him in a way. and i would say that somewhat, the other people at hogwarts never tried to tell them they were being mean/racist/etc, because they assumed they were a lost cause... you know?

Update 2:

ok, i'm going to do something that all HP fans hate [including myself, for the most part] and refer to the movies. i haven't read the 7th book in awhile, and i'm planning on reading it again soon to get my facts straight, but at least in the movie draco says he's only killing dumbledore because otherwise, voldemort will kill himself and his family. however, when dumbledore starts offering him and his family protection, he starts to lower his wand.

and, lets just say for a moment that it IS just cowardice. how would you react in the situation? it might be easy for hero's like harry to give up his life for the good of other people, but i'm sure most people in the world wouldn't be to quick to decide what to do.

Update 3:

also, i'm not in any way trying to DEFEND him. i know what he did was wrong, and that if he was a real person i know i probably would have hated him, but my question is just do you feel remotely sorry for him, and the life he's had to grow up with.

Update 4:

*sorry, i meant 6th book [not 7th].

I agree that he was raised with those morals, but there's a certain point in life where you have to take responsibility for yourself and your beliefs. He may have changed a bit towards the end but he's still a racist scum bag .

I felt bad for him in that, he was a boy who was in way over his head and he didn't know how to get out. But I still say he is a racist, spoiled brat.

Edit- I agree that Malfoy isn't a killer, or a good death eater. That's why I feel sorry for him. He got involved with Voldemort thinking it would be easy, but instead he ended up in a horrible situation that he couldn't control. He proved he was not a killer and that he was only going to follow his elitist racist attitude so far. But he still kept his elitist racist attitude.

I didn't feel sorry for Draco Malfoy. However, I felt sorry that Rowling missed a prime opportunity for a redemptive arc in his character. After spending six books fashioning Draco into an arch antagonist for Harry, I would dearly have loved to see Draco repudiate his dark past and embrace redemption. And no, his not killing Dumbledore was NOT that choice; that was simply cowardice.

In the end we neither get Draco embracing his dark side, nor repenting of it. The whole character-arc that was Draco Malfoy just sort of sputters and whimpers out the door. What a disappointment.

And I disagree that "the only reason he's considered a bad person is because of the morals he's grown up with." He's considered a bad person because of the choices he's made and the acts he's performed.

I do and I don't. He was born into a dark family, but everyone has a choice. Sirius Black was in the same situation and he ran away from his horrid family. So, Draco is either a coward and afraid to stand up for himself, or he's just as bad as his father and actually wants to be evil. I think it's a bit of both. He's obviously a jerk but also a coward for not walking away when the evilness being asked of him got too far. We all have a choice.

Yes he is just really confused because of the surroundings he was brought in. Before he thought that being on Voldemort's side would make him "powerful" but then once he actually was on his side he felt that it wasn't that good. He felt remorse for what he had done and that is shown by not giving Harry, Ron and Hermione to Voldemort imidiatly he just pretended that he wasn't sure.

I actually think he could've been a nice person if someone had taken the time to teach him and point him in the right direction.

Harry and Draco could've been friends.

    Hi there,

Funny: Tom Felton asked the same question on Twitter some time ago. I must admit that I do not really feel sorry for him. Bad examples are one thing - being too weak (or lazy?) to stand up against things you instinctively know to be wrong is quite another.

    Cheers

I ve only ever seen the movies but admittedly, I did feel bad for him in Half-Blood Prince. It seemed like the one Harry Potter movie where you got to see it from his point of view and given the path his parents took, I don t think he really had any choice. I can only imagine how his parents would react if he d tried to argue against their view so I feel like he didn t have much choice but to go with what they said but he s not a murderer, he didn t want to kill Voldemort, he didn t want to attack Harry and he pretended he wasn t sure about Ron, Harry and Hermione. When I saw him starting to cry in Half-Blood Prince, I really did feel sympathy for him. He does strike me as the sort who just wants to make his parents proud of him.
