will get a betta-need advise?

how many liters do they need? Do I need a carbon filter? What temperature are they ok with? How often do I have to change the water? Do I need to put the water a few days BEFORE getting the fish? thanks

Update:

THanks for all the advise. I m getting a 10 liter tank that comes with its own filter.

All fish, including bettas, do best in a filtered tank.

I would get one that is at least 3 gallons.

They do not survive normal tap water so you need to condition it and it is best to have your new tank cycle before getting your fish. Normal tap has too much chlorine for them to survive.

Bettas live in water that is 75-82 degrees and like to have plants that offer them cover. If you are getting artificial plants make sure they are not sharp and will not tear the fish's fins.

When getting decoration for your tank make sure it isn't rough or will catch the fins. Make sure it has a cave for it to hide in.

    Weekly water changes are good.

This is the tank I got my betta

and he will be living with a couple of cory cats.

Good luck with your new pet.

Basically you shouldn't worry about the filter and how much water you give them because if you have a glass vase and fill it up to the neck of the vase then the betta will be fine. You should change the water once a week and while you do this you should fill up a plastic container with water and keep the betta in there until you are finished changing the water. Since the pet store gives the betta to you in a small container, you should mix the water from that container into any temperature of water, just not hot. The betta will adjust to the temperature, and from then on when you change the water, use the same temperature. Putting the water in a few days before you get the fish probably isn't necessary, but if you want room temperature water probably like they have it in at the pet store, you could leave the water out the night before. Also, you should put gravel at the bottom of the tank, and when you change the water, just rinse the gravel. Sometimes the sides of the tank may get a little green, and to deal with this, just wash the sides with a soapy sponge, then rinse out the tank with hot water, making sure you get out all the suds, then fill it with colder water again. Also, some people put a plant at the top of the vase, so that it is coming out, and this can be pretty as well. Note that bettas are fighting fish, so they will kill each other if they are in the same tank. Even getting a tank with a glass seperator in between will stress them out. Lastly, bettas can live up to 10 years but usually they only live 1-3 years with good care.

I hope this was helpful. Have fun! :)

Do not listen to the first person! A betta needs a filter, just like any fish. They need room to swim, just like any fish. But, unlike other fish, they breathe with lung-like organs at the surface of the water & if there is something blocking that (I.e. A plant) they will suffocate & DIE!

They need at least a 5 gallon tank, a heater, a filter (carbon or undergravel), one inch of gravel (2 lbs per gallon), live plants (they can get injured on the fake ones), & a hidey cave in case they get scared (they stress very easily. I use a new, clean flower pot). You will also need a net, gravel siphon, water conditioner, & fish food.

Bettas like their temperature warmer, I've found. It wil always be in the "yellow zone" (81*) on my thermometer, but when I turn it down, they seem less active & alert. You can do a 25% water change once a week. I feel that if you do this is isn't neccisary to do 50% once a month because you've been continuously keeping it clean. It is a good idea to let your tank run with heater & filter for a few days without any fish in it, but if you're going to add a fish to an uncycled tank, it really isn't extremly different than adding them an hour after you set it up.

I may not work at a pet store, but I own a lot of bettas, & I think keeping something alive for years is better than being able to sell someone a living thing based on lies. Betta vases are cruel, & only a sick & twisted person would ever use one.

    1. 10 liters minimum but at least 20 liters would be best.

    2. They should have a carbon filter but if for some reason you can't get one you should at least have some kind of filter.

    3. They are tropical fish so 77F-80F. (25C-26.6C)

    4. Remove 25% of the water with a gravel siphon once weekly.

    5. You should cycle the aquarium before putting the betta in but if you plan to do a fish in cycle with your betta then put the water in the aquarium wait 24 hours then you can add the betta. Here is a good article on cycling an aquarium. http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm Another name for the cycling process is the nitrogen cycle.

    Good Luck.

i have been breeding betta splendens for o lets say a very long time and you don't need a filter but it will help to keep the water clear, you should do partial water change 25% each week and wash part of the filter(sponge) in the water you have just taken from the tank, then replace the water with declorianated water use tape safe from inter-pet.as for size to get a more natural display then 10 gallon but Siamese fighters will live in a jam jar given the right care (i do not advise the jam jar) temperature i keep mine at a fluctuating temperature to bring them in and out of breeding season 21 to 28 in between will be fine if you are not breeding, only keep one male fighter to a tank or they will kill one another, but you can put as many females as you would like together with no problems (think of you nitrate table). and as for setting up your tank the seeding(nitrate table) of a tank in the right conditions will take exactly 48 days, during this time keep your filter going 24/7 and you don't need your light on to seed a filter.no you do not need a carbon filter but again it will help. hope this helps

Actually Bettas are the easiest pet to have. I worked at 2 pet stores and I always advised this to be a first pet. Bettas can be put in a bowl with a quart of regular water and fed betta pellets. They are pretty resilient and do not need a lot of care. Do not put 2 in the same bowl. They are also known as fighting fish. They will kill each other. I think it looks very interesting when you put a betta in the bottom of a glass vase with colored stones. Then you can add some flowers or greenery coming out the vase.

    Have fun!
