You can sue that person for slander. Slander is spoken words that are untrue and spoken with malicious intent. And I can't point you to a lawyer since I don't know where you are, but I am sure you can call the state Bar Association in whatever state you reside and they can help you find a good lawyer that can assist you. Good luck!

Libel is typically in writing, slander is typically verbal. Can you sue for it? Yes and no. Good answer so far, huh?

First of all, what state are you in (feel free to email this to me as I don't revisit questions)?

you can sue someone for libel, but in order to win, but there are a lot of very specific requirements you have to meet. the great majority of libel and slander suits get thrown out.

You sure can! Slander is a tort under defamation. There must be three parties involved- you, the person spreading rumors about you, and the people being told the rumors. Get a lawyer, good luck!
