How to use a USB joystick for the old x-wing game?
Ok so a couple of days ago i was trying to find a way to download the old X-wing game (the first one) and after a while i found a place that well let play it for free (http://www.freegameempire.com/games/X-Wing). Basically what it does is you download the game and the website starts it up without you having to go get a dos-box. anyway the game works great, but it doesn't let you use a USB joystick (mines a logitech extreme 3d pro) so anyways if anyone knows how to fix this or has any ideas that would be great.

You're out of luck dude.
Those old PC games were pretty picky about the hardware compatibilities. It usually only listed the SPECIFIC joystick / game controls it was compatible with. The compatibility would really be up to the simulator / emulator (I would check the FAQs of the game site you're using to see if they offer a way to make your USB joystick compatible).
Sorry - there's no quick and easy answer. You'll have to dig into the website documentation to find it. My past experiences tell me you most likely WON'T be able to get it to work (especially if you're using Windows XP or greater).
