My 74yr old father, just had Hernia surgery and is having some constipation is it safe to take Mira lax?

He has been home 1 full day now, and I give my 2 1/2 yr old Mira lax to help his bowels move from time to time. so i figure if its safe enough for a 2yr old then is should be gentle enough for a 74yr old recovering from surgery. please help with this advice.

No. Stay away from laxatives. He should take a stool softener along with drinking more liquids and eating more fiber. The pain killers are likely to slow the peristaltic action. His doctor should have instructed him to eat more fibrous food and drink more water.

Please do not take advice online when it comes to the health of your elderly Dad, having just had surgery. Contact his surgeon or physician, if at all possible. Otherwise, contact a pharmacy to inquire. I hope he recovers well from the surgery. =)
