you can't download free full versions of games unless you do so illegally. It's exactly the same as shoplifting from the store, and you really don't want to get mixed up in that and all the trouble it can cause.

If people tell you places to go where you can do that, stay away. It's both illegal and unsafe. Plus anyone that tries to help you do something illegal will most likely wind up being banned at Yahoo themselves because promoting illegal piracy is a violation of the forum rules.

@Suni - I will agree with you that freeware games exist, and that in most cases it's legal to download if you find them. I looked at the gamershell site. They offer direct downloads. I was not familiar with most of the games offered, but tried looking at a small sampling and they appear to be legitimate older games that are now offered as free or shareware. That site appeared to be a legitimate site to download from.

However, I stand by my advice regarding torrent sites, like mininova. There is a huge amount of illegal pirating going on at sites like this and the site owners know it. Viruses are rampant because the people doing it know they can get away with it. They know you can't complain about getting a virus while you're stealing. I went to mininova and with just a few keystrokes brought up literally dozens of (cracked) games that I know well and are definitely not legal to share.

Sites like mininova, limewire, etc claim to be legal. And they are sort of. They skirt the law because they provide file sharing technology, not downloads. The technology they provide is legal, but the vast majority of downloading activity going on the site is not.

The argument they use to maintain legality is that they are like the manufacturer of a hammer. You can use a hammer to drive in a nail, or you can use it to illegally break into someone's house. The user of the hammer committed the crime, not the people that made the hammer.

When they post proclaimations about being legal, this gives kids a false sense of security that it must be ok to download what they find on the site, and in fact the majority of what you find there to download is absolutely illegal. Is there freeware software being shared there too? probably, but you have no way to trust the source of the torrent so I still would not recommend these sites as the place to get those types of games.

The gaming, music, and motion picture associations basically are always going after sites like this in the courts. I believe mininova is currently under suit. They are trying to get sites like mininova to be more accountable for removing illegal content from their sites, which of course they don't want to do because it would cost them money and reduce the traffic to the site significantly if the pirated software went away.

Keep in mind if you want to download a game - If you're finding that many places are selling the game you're interested in, or the game is basically packaged with a limited time demo, then it's not free or shareware. If you find a torrent that has it, you are illegally stealing that copyrighted game by downloading it.
