i like to keep mine sideways.. my old one tipped over on me one time.. thats why its my old one lol.. but what i do now so it doesnt over heat is set it on top of the box it came in so it has a little breathing room instead of the carpet smothering it.. i havent had any problems with that

I always keep my xbox horizontal (sideways) and even have a hardwood floor. I think it would be best for you to keep it sideways because it could tip while your playing and damage it.

vertical is recommended so it doesn't overheat as much. but horizontal makes it easier to put the disk in
