Find a wire short in car?

Been working around my instrument cluster on my 1998 mustang. Got a smog test and failed cause my VSS and check engine light malfunction. I was checking the voltage and resistance of the related connections to the back of my cluster. One wasn't showing up, I fear there is a short somewhere, but don't know how to find it. All fuses are good.

    What's the code?

  • First thing to do is actually check for a short by disconnecting the battery (neg) and running a digital amp meter as the ground... you should have less than 1.8 amps total draw ( that's the factory draw for the clock and security systems).

If that checks good, then assuming you haven't upgraded the ecu with a hypertech or simular product, haven't changed out the exhaust from factory, and haven't changed MAS or TBI to bigger models. then the problem will be in the wire harness to the cluster, ECU, O2 sensor, or feul pressure regulator. The easiest way to check all those is by haveing a system diagnostic done at a dealer.

If you have changed out exhaust and programing.. then I encourage you to use High flow cats, real O2 sensors not the dummys, a cold air induction system, and if you changed out the MAS or added a TBI plate, then definately upgrade the feul injectors to higher than 60 psi models.

The only way to pass a smog test is by knowing how to make upgrades that work together... but the light malfunction shouldn't keep you from passing, if it did then check with the laws there for an ammended test standard because the actually bulb can fuse the fillament for a short circuit without lighting up.
