There's different techniques that you can use. My personal favorite is putting a warm, damp wash cloth over my face and popping in my ipod to listen with a calming song.
If you're not in an environment where you can do that, doodling seems to help a little also. Think of something funny that made you laugh and doodle, block everything else out.
Also, drinking water or milk helps me a lot. Drinking pretty much anything can work though. It helps to slow down your breathing, which in turn gets you to calm down a bit.

The only way that I can prevent a panic attack is self talk. I'm inflicted with an anxiety disorder and I have panic attacks all the time. I just have to tell myself that I'm better then the issues I'm facing...whatever really works I guess!
It also helps to talk to someone...a friend or a family member or a therapist. I will usually call them on the phone and talk to them if I feel like I'm having a panic attack to try stop it...

Try not to get real excite or scared. When you start to have one just relax and breath slowly. Some people have to tell there dr. about them and get on some medicine.
