I am no expert, but having had many dogs over the years can answer with a little athority. Dogs on the whole are a very hearty species and unless they have internal injuries or have eaten something that has poison in it are most likely to survive, assuming it is a younger dog and in otherwise good health. The hot nose would probably indicate a fever, if no help is availible at the moment fluids will be of the most help, as well as shade. Swelling (major swelling), puss, or odor with the would becoming angry, would be cause for concern. I would tell your friend not to be to concerned for at least a couple days as long as the dog is getting some fluids and regains its appetite within a few days. We all lose our attetites when we get sick, so its no big deal.
