Rails are laid down when there is a lot of traffic, As a matter of fact the CNR is presently laying a Third main line between Montreal and Toronto due to the heavy freight traffic and the heavy passenger traffic on VIA Rail. When you approach Toronto from the east Ontarios' GO Trains have their own dedicated track into Toronto. You are right when you say that North Americans just love their cars, you have to remember that Auto manufacturing has been the reason for this because Henry Ford sold cars that the average family could afford, whereas Asian Countries depended on Railways to move people and freight. Another big plus or minus is our Interstate Highway system which can move cars and trucks faster than freight trains can, (Most of the time). Another thing you have to bear in mind when comparing South Korea to USA. Korea doesn't have the same infrastructure as the U.S. Another thing to remember is how many Americans are immigrating to Korea compared to Koreans immigrating to North America. I'm only guessing here but I'll bet that they move here for economic reasons so that they can support a family and own their own car.
