When polishing silver, to remove tarnish?
when polishing silver, to remove tarnish, do you actually remove a small amount of silver (silver oxide, I should say) or is tarnish something that collects on silver and the base metal is never really affected. I think the metal does oxidize and each time you polish, you are removing a small amount. Is this true?

Yes, when you polish tarnished silver, you are actually removing small particles of the silver.
The silver you are removing is oxidized. If you looked at it under a microscope, it would appear to be very bumpy and weak. This is why it polishes off so easily.
Interestingly, the tarnish actually helps protect the untarnished silver under it because it helps keep oxygen from reaching the untarnished silver...so when you polish and remove the tarnish, you expose the untarnished silver to more oxygen...which in turn causes it to tarnish!
Still...polished silver looks so much better, and you are only removing a thin film of silver when you polish it.

On sterling silver I would use either a cream polish or jewelers rouge.
Never use that acid rich crap that's advertised on T.V. I found an old set of silver candlestick holders at a yard sale once and you could see the brass base metal popping through in some spots so I would have to say that sometimes the silver coating can be polished away.

To remove the tarnish don't use any chemical things if u soak it for a long time say in soap water u can remove it easily using any brush...
as u know wearing ornaments everyday will lose some milli amount. Whatever u use to make it clear soap water or the paste keep some time soaked..............its easy to remove

I polish my silver with tooth brush and tooth paste and it removes only black thing on the silver, not the silver itself. Try it this way and your silver will be just fine.
