Can I have the flu vaccine?

I'm a pretty healthy person, and I've not once in my life had the flu, nor have I ever had a flu vaccination. The main reason being that as a child, I was severely allergic to eggs, the proteins of which are included in the flu shot. However, last year, in order to attend college, I had to have Menactra (the meningitis vaccination), which also has egg proteins in it. My physician did an allergy test on me since I hadn't had one in a few years, and I guess I did alright, because I was administered Menactra, although it was in small portions at 15 minute intervals.

Being that this flu season is set up to be worse than most, what I was wondering is if it would be safe for me to have the normal flu vaccine this year and the vaccine for H1N1 whenever it is distributed to the public? Should I ask my doctor before doing anything?

Yes, refer to your doctor prior to taking any shots if you think you may be allergic to any of the ingredients. It will be better to have the shots in a controlled environment in case anything goes wrong.

Yes, talk with your doctor before getting flu vaccinations. Doctors usually recommend that people who are allergic to eggs not get the shot.
