how to determine whether y is a function of x for these equations?

x^2+y^2=4

y^2=x^2-1

    Are these two separate questions? If so, then y is not a function of x in either of them because there is more than one possible y output value for most x input values with both of them. A function can only have one output value for each input value.

    This is an independent system with four pair of solutions a=+/- Sqrt[3/2], and b=+/- Sqrt[5/2]
