First make sure the movie and subtitle files are in the same folder.
Then use VLC Media Player, it is free and the only one I have ever gotten to play subs.

open your media player's options and enable the subtitles. generally the subtitles (.sub file) have to be in the same folder as the movie (.avi file), but your media player may be different, and may not support the use of subtitles, in which case you need a new one. I use Media Player classic. It works with that, and it doesn't use up a lot of memory. the download page link is listed below. -Mike Legal X

If you use VLC player, you can simply drag the file onto the window where the movie is playing and the subtitles will appear.
I'm not sure about other players, but you should try looking through the menus for the right option.

I use VLC player, but you can also download/install DirectVobSub.
Pretty simple.
Then, all you have to do is to download the subtitle file (which normally has a SRT file extension) and put it in the same folder as the AVI movie file. Note that both the SRT and AVI file must have the same name (eg. movie.srt and movie.avi). When you play the AVI file through your media player.

You should put your movie file and subtitle file in the same folder....and also check whether the two files have the exact same name....Then you play it...it will work.....
Some subtitles doesnt have any dialogue inside even it is .srt file or .sub file.....juz download new subtitle from www.subcene.com
by giving the same name as the movie file have....

The best player I ever tried (for subtitling) is VLC.
You have different options to show subtitles. By default VLC will show subtitles if you do one of these actions :
- Drag & drop subtitle file (.srt/.***) in the playing movie
- Open it separately with VLC, with VLC 1.0.1 : "Media" > "Advanced Open File" > then check "subtitle" and choose your subtitle file.
- The best, because it's automatic : rename your subtitle like your movie, i.e. if your movie's name is "The.Movie.avi", name it "The.Movie.srt".
Even better : you can rename several subtitles (several languages for example) files for one movie like : "The.Movie.English.srt" and "The.Movie.French.srt". Then in VLC : "Video" > "Subtitles Track" and you will see "English" and "French".
Last tip for this method: you can put all your subtitles files in a "subtitle" folder, it will stay automatic and clean your folder. It's very useful for TV shows ;)

Search for the .srt file - this is the subtitle files.. Be sure that this file is in the same folder as the folder of your downloaded movie.

you need to ensure both files (the movie and the subs) have the exact same name (but obviously having different extensions) and as long as they are in the same folder, your media platyer should detect them and play them automatic.
ensure you are using a good media player like VLC player too, and ensure you have subs activated, as you may have unwittingly dissabled them.
