Does a wireless router increase internet speed?
I'm not tech knowledgeable person so forgive the foolish question. I recently moved into a new apartment and setup internet access with Verizon DSL. It is very slow. I just want to know if I could considerably increase my internet speed by hooking my DSL modem up to a wireless router or if my speed stay the same but be broadcasted to all the computers within range. And if it does increase speed, can anyone suggest a good router please. Thank you in advance.

No. Your internet speed is totally dependant on your phone line and the ISP.

It really depends on the speed that your ISP is giving you; depending on what you are using DSL, Cable etc. DSL is normally slower then Cable but if you live in an area that has high Cable Internet usage then that will slow your speeds. The router will ensure that the data is transmitting as fast as possible to the other computers that you are sharing your Internet with; but if the speed that you're getting from your service provider is slow then nothing will help you. You can call them and ask them what maximum speeds are set for you and see if there are any higher speeds available. Also, make sure to set up your router with a password and limit the number of computers that can access it. If you don't protect it you will have other people hacking in and sharing your bandwidth; which will slow you down further.

well no using a wireless router will almost always slow you down try wired if you have the time to run wires and everything is close enough. also if Verizon fios is available were you live switch to that if you are favorable to Verizon if not try any isp offering broadband, it will cost more money but you will get a faster internet connection
